Photosynthesis is a process to manufacture food from inorganic substances in the presence of solar energy. Photosynthesis takes place in plants.
Green plants prepare their own food with the help of photosynthesis. They produce organic substances by drawing water & nutrients from soil, radiant energy of the sun and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Photosynthesis is possible only in the presence of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a pigment having green color. It is present in the leaves of the plant. Photosynthesis plays a major role in initiating the food chain because glucose is the minimum basic requirement of energy for all living beings present on earth.

Green plants are also known as autotrophs because they are primary producers of food. During the process of photosynthesis the sun energy is transformed into chemical energy. Chemical energy is then stored as sugar or glucose.
The credit of discovering the process of photosynthesis in plants goes to Joseph Priestly. In his findings he discovered that during this process sunlight, water & carbon dioxide are used to produce water, glucose and oxygen.

6 CO2 + 12 H2O + sun light → C6 H12 O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O
Hence it is also said that the process of photosynthesis is just the opposite of respiration because it replaces carbon dioxide with oxygen in the environment. In the above equation
6 CO2 = 6 molecules of carbon dioxide
12 H2O = 12 molecules of water
C6 H12 O6 = Glucose
6 O2 = 6 molecules of oxygen

Photosynthesis plays an important role in maintaining the environment on earth. Photosynthesis occurs within the leaves of plants. Hence water, carbon dioxide & sunlight is transported/ obtained to the leaves. Green leaves have tiny pores over its surface. These pores are called stomata. Carbon dioxide is absorbed through stomata.
Similarly oxygen is released though these pores. Water is absorbed through the roots & transported to the leaves with the help of scientific system called vascular plant tissue. Chlorophyll absorbs sun light. Photosynthesis takes place in 2 stages-
