Being able to read and write is the basics of life and one who does not know how to read or write is called an illiterate.
Illiteracy is very high in India and it definitely effects in the growth of the nation too.
It is truly a shame to know that a country like India, which is known as the land of Vedas and that which gave epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana, still remains to be illiterate.
One of the main reasons for such a high percentage of illiteracy in India is due to unemployment, female foeticide, child labor etc.

There is a huge gap in the literacy ratio among the urban and rural population in India. Since the rural population mainly depends on agriculture the literacy ratio is very low when compared to the urban areas.
Literacy helps in making people think more rationally, it helps to be more understanding and take the right kind of decisions. When one is literate one can fight causes like communism, terrorism etc. When one is illiterate, it is easy to feed them with ill thoughts as they do not think for themselves or rationally.

A developed nation depends on citizens being educated. India has to work together to bring this rate of illiteracy down and to make sure that every person is educated. The government needs to take actions to increase literacy rates, thereby making sure that every Indian get educated at the right time, which, would definitely lead to the growth and development of the nation in the long run.
