Here is your short paragraph on Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary:
It commemorates the birth of the first Guru (born in A.D. 1469) Citation and muttering of Guru Grantha Sahib, Bhajan, Kirtana, etc. are the notable happenings of the occasion.
Historians tells us that at the age of thirty, Nanak had an experience that changed his life emerging from a river after everybody had thought he had drowned.
From that moment, he was called ‘Guru Nanak’ and people started gathering around him to listen to his sermons and his singing.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Before he died in 1539, he appointed Angad as his successor, Nanak was 69 at that time. Thus, began a non-hereditary but religious succession of ten Gurus, till 1708 when the Holy Book became the spiritual successor, embodying the divine inspiration that had pervaded the Sikh community for nearly two centuries. It is the basis for Sikh devotion, prayer and theology.
That Holy Book, the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, is the object of intense and devotional worship in each Sikh temple Gurudwara, all over India and from Bangkok to California. All the compositions of Guru Nanak and of the successor Guru’s were collected in the Shree Guru Granth Saheb in 1604.
